The dance pants are more conducive to fluid movement and allow for a greater range of motion. The old style uniforms were appropriate when corps visually had rigid movement and an emphasis on straight lines (not in drill, but as a visual philosophy). ![]() Crown in '13 ditched the old inflexible bibs and went with something more flexible and appropriate. In Cabaret Voltaire, the Blue Devils deconstructed the idea of uniforms and showed that there are advantages to marching without shakos and jackets. Two big uniform moves over the last decade were instrumental in influencing the Downside Up design: BD in '12 and Crown in '13. Cadets '05 with the backwards torso jacket. Every once in a while, a corps would use their uniforms creatively or design special show-specific uniforms. Although there have been minor modifications, the standard drum corps uniform itself has been relatively unchanged for decades. You can trace innovations of Downside Up to roots from previous shows and corps throughout the years.įor the uniforms, the hatless leotards were an evolution of the revitalization of uniform design, which had honestly become stagnant over the years. I guess you could call it groundbreaking, but it wasn't exactly unprecedented. I don't mean that as a knock on the show, it is absolutely fantastic. What's your opinion on what Downside Up did to Drum Corps?ĭownside Up didn't force DCI to do anything that wasn't already going to happen anyways. If you look before 2016, there's years such as 2000, 2003, 2008, and 2014 which hold non-stop fantastic shows, and we just haven't seen shows like these since Downside Up. While there has been great shows such as Bluecoats 2016, SCV 2017, Blue Devils 2017, SCV 2018, Cavaliers 2018, and Bluecoats 2018, theres just not as many good shows. It's clear that the old style still works, as shown by the first half of Cavaliers 2018 (having a relatively throwback vibe) and I wish it would come back. The worst part is seeing amazing corps like phantom regiment, the Cadets, and even the Cavaliers having an extremely hard time transitioning. With the new preferred uniforms being less traditional and more for a wow factor, and having less focus of marching and more on dancing and visuals, I feel it's an overall weak change. ![]() ![]() As much as I love downside up, and think it's a fantastic show, I feel like it has sent the entirety of corps in the wrong direction.
